Needs Assessment

Under the auspices of the University of San Francisco, Project Learn Belize is sponsored by the University’s School of Education. Donations and proceeds from fundraising help in the purchasing of essential school supplies, books and technology. Besides supplies and personnel, Project Learn Belize is committed to the renovation and expansion of facilities at Sacred Heart and other schools in Dangriga.

January, 2008 witnessed the addition of 5 classrooms and a school office, made possible by the matching grant of the first benefactor of Project Learn Belize. A major renovation of Sacred Heart’s small kitchen and lunch room was completed in August, 2008. Beautiful new wood tables and chairs were built by and purchased from the Mennonites. The school feeds breakfast and lunch to over 80 students each school day, who would otherwise go without meals.

In order to address the need for reading rooms/library at Sacred Heart School, which would provide “quiet space” for students to improve their literacy, plans are well underway. Students of the Architecture Department at USF have created plans for this new building and the pledged support of Project Learn Belize benefactors will hopefully make this dream a reality for the Sacred Heart community as well .

During the summer of 2012, the original classroom building (built in 1945) received an extensive external “makeover”: the crumbling verandah was replaced; the roof, walls, and shutters received new paint, all in time for the start of the new school year.
